Political developments in Tamil Nadu took a dramatic turn on Friday after actor-politician Vijay’s party secured the crucial majority mark of 118 in the 234-member Assembly to form the government. The party achieved the breakthrough after key opposition parties such as Congress, Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), Communist Party of India (CPI) and Communist Party of India (Marxist) extended their support for the formation of the TVK-led government.

With 107 MLAs of its own, TVK amassed decisive backing from Congress’ five legislators, alongside two MLAs each from CPI, CPI(M) and VCK, driving the tally upwards.

Vijay likely to meet Governor this evening

TVK Chief Vijay is likely to stake his claim once again before Governor RV Arlekar, with a crucial meeting rescheduled for later this evening. Notably, Arlekar earlier declined to invite TVK to form the government, owing to insufficient proof of majority.

A political storm brewed after the refusal, as opposition parties alleged attempts to impose indirect control of the Union Government through constitutional means.

Backchannel negotiations seal the deal

Intense negotiations unfolded at the backend. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge reportedly played a key role, engaging directly with VCK leadership to consolidate support for Vijay. Subsequently, both CPI and CPI(M) endorsed the TVK, reshaping the Assembly arithmetic and potentially ending the impasse over government-formation.

VCK leader criticises Vijay, BJP

Despite backing Vijay, alliance partners refused to hold back criticism. VCK leader Sinthanai Selvan accused the BJP of using the Governor to destabilise the politics in the South Indian state and warned of threats to democratic norms.

Moreover, he also questioned Vijay’s post-election outreach, slamming his way of seeking support. Selvan asserted that informal communication through messaging platforms reflected poorly on his leadership, while also blaming certain aides for isolating Vijay.

Political leaders voice calls for floor test

Amid the ongoing developments, Karnataka Minister Priyank Kharge urged adherence to constitutional norms. He opined that any party claiming majority must prove it in the Assembly, rather than resorting to informal assurances.
