UCC in MP: The Madhya Pradesh Government on Wednesday has indicated a strong move towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state. Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav urged ministers to study the framework closely. According to officials, during the MP cabinet meeting chaired on Tuesday, the CM signalled that the state is preparing to enforce the UCC, setting administrative processes into motion.

Following directives from the CM, the Home Department has ramped up the efforts, as it has been entrusted with drafting the proposed legislation. As per sources, a high-level state committee will likely be constituted shortly to steer the process. Reportedly, the government is aiming to roll out the UCC before Diwali this year.
Models already implemented in Uttarakhand, Goa
Before drafting the bill, the state is going through models already implemented in Goa and Uttarakhand. Officials are examining these frameworks to create a practical and balanced version suited to MP’s socio-cultural fabric. Once the draft is prepared, it will be presented before the Cabinet for approval. Owing to the sensitivity of the issue, the government is proceeding cautiously, ensuring that the timing and provisions are well-calibrated.
UCC in MP: Social diversity in MP a key challenge
According to officials, implementation of UCC in MP poses unique challenges due to its diverse social composition, particularly its significant tribal population. Of the 230 Assembly seats in the state, 47 are reserved for the Scheduled Tribes (ST), many of whom follow traditional marriage practices and customs.
The government shall ensure that the interests of all communities are safeguarded while framing the law, providing a social balance in its implementation.

Where has UCC been enforced in India earlier?
Notably, Uttarakhand emerged as the first state in India to enforce the UCC in February 2024, and it came into effect from January 27, 2025. The law mandates registration of marriages, divorces and live-in relationships, with penalties for non-compliance.
Following this, the bill was also passed in Gujarat in March 2026, which is awaiting implementation. The law ensures equal inheritance rights for sons and daughters, while excluding STs. Meanwhile, Assam has criminalised polygamy, though a comprehensive UCC is yet to be fully enforced there.
