Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, days after urging the country’s citizens to adopt fuel-saving measures in light of global disruptions following geopolitical tensions in West Asia, on Wednesday ordered a 50% reduction in the number of vehicles in his official cavalcade. Sources aware of the development said that the Prime Minister has directed the Special Protection Group (SPG) to downsize his convoy while ensuring that all essential security protocols remain intact.

PM pushes for electric mobility without new purchases

Alongside the reduction in vehicle usage, PM Modi has emphasised the inclusion of electricity vehicles within his convoy wherever feasible. Notably, he has instructed officials not to procure new vehicles, signalling a cost-effective and sustainable approach.

It is noteworthy that the downsizing had already been introduced during his recent visits to Gujarat and Assam, following a public address in Telangana’s Hyderabad.

During a rally in Hyderabad, the Prime Minister had appealed to the citizens to adopt fuel-saving measures in light of global disruptions. He advocated for a shift towards public transport systems like Metro Rail, increased carpooling and wider adoption of electric vehicles (EVs).

PM Modi also suggested optimising logistics by using railway services for transportation of parcels and encouraged remote working practices (Work From Home) where possible, aimed at conservation of fuel and foreign exchange.

BJP leaders follow suit

The PM's appeal has begun to resonate across states governed by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). In Madhya Pradesh, Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav reduced his convoy’s size from 13 vehicles to just 8, and has directed the other cabinet ministers of the state to limit vehicle usage during official travel. Additionally, he has also discouraged large vehicle rallies during official visits.

Meanwhile, the newly-appointed officials have also been advised to assume office with simplicity and keep extravagant displays, such as vehicle convoys at bay.
