A 24-year-old married woman, a social media influencer, was found dead under suspicious circumstances at her marital home in UP’s Lucknow, allegedly after she was constantly harassed by her husband and in-laws over dowry demands. The incident, according to police, has been reported from the Saadatganj area of the state capital, and has put the spotlight again on the persistent menace of dory-related atrocities in the country.

As learnt by police, the woman, who had a sound presence on social media, was found hanging at her in-laws’ house on Sunday, barely six months after getting hitched. Her husband, who too is a social media influencer with a following of 7.5 lakh on Instagram, has been named as an accused along with several of his family members.

Woman’s family alleges dowry harassment

Police officials in the know of the case said that the couple had got married on December 9, 2025. However, the woman’s family alleged that the marriage was soon marred by repeated demands for dowry.

Her kin claimed they had already given Rs 7 lakh in cash to the groom’s family along with household items and other gifts during the wedding ceremonies. Despite this, she was allegedly subjected to persistent pressure from her husband and in-laws, who demanded more money and a car.

The victim’s kin said she frequently informed them about the alleged harassment and the mistreatment she was facing at her marital home. They claimed that they visited the husband’s family on several occasions to resolve the dispute and establish peace between the families.

Husband, in-laws booked

The police said the victim’s uncle lodged a complaint, accusing the husband and in-laws of killing her over unmet dowry demands. Those named in the FIR include the husband, the victim’s father-in-law, brother-in-law, sisters-in-law and a paternal aunt in-law. After the FIR was registered, the cops inspected the scene and completed inquest proceedings to send the body for a post-mortem examination later.

Officials said that Section 80(2) and 85 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) have been invoked against the accused, along with Sections 3 and 4 of the Dowry Prohibition Act.

Case draws parallels with Twisha Sharma case

The case bears resemblance to the recent death of former actor-model Twisha Sharma, whose family also alleged dowry harassment at the hands of her husband and mother-in-law. The police have launched an extensive manhunt to apprehend the accused in the Lucknow case.
