Ladakh avalanche: As many as seven persons were killed and several others were injured after a massive avalanche struck near Ladakh’s Zoji La, burying multiple vehicles under heavy snow. The incident, as per officials, has led to the closure of the busy Srinagar-Leh highway, disrupting connectivity in the region.
Officials aware of the tragedy confirmed that over a dozen vehicles were either partially or completely buried when multiple avalanches hit the stretch between Zero Point and Minimarg on Friday noon. Rescue teams said the death toll is expected to mount, as some vehicles remain inaccessible under thick deposits of snow.

Ladakh avalanche: Multiple agencies roped in for rescue ops
The authorities have launched a large-scale rescue operation, pressing the Indian Army, police, Border Roads Organisation, State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and the local district authorities into service. Efforts are underway to locate and extract the ones feared trapped. Chief Medical Officer Liyaqat Khan said that most of the injured people have been treated and discharged, while one is still under medical supervision. The ones injured include residents from Leh and Srinagar, with several sustaining minor to moderate injuries.
Ladakh LG monitoring situation closely
Ladakh Lieutenant Governor (LG) VK Saxena said he is keeping a close tab on the situation. He added that senior officials in Kargil have been directed to reach the site and expedite the rescue and relief operations. Meanwhile Union Minister Jitendra Singh also confirmed the death toll and assured that all necessary assistance is being extended to the affected families.
J&K CM expresses grief
Chief Minister (CM) of Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah expressed grief over the loss of lives in the disaster. He extended condolences to the bereaved families and prayed for the swift recovery of the injured. In a statement posted on social media, he termed the incident ‘deeply tragic’ and offered support to the ones impacted.

Notably, the Srinagar-Leh highway is a crucial lifeline connecting Ladakh to the rest of India. In the aftermath of the natural calamity, it remains blocked due to accumulated snow and debris.
