AP students drowning death: Five engineering students died by drowning in the Godavari River in Andhra Pradesh’s Eluru district on Friday, the police said. As per police, the incident has sent shockwaves through the region, and has raised concerns over safety awareness near water bodies.

Fortunately, two other students, who had accompanied the group, managed to survive the incident, the police added.

Bodies of 3 students recovered


The investigating police officials said that of the five who died, bodies of three students have been recovered so far. They added that the rescue teams are persevering in efforts to trace the remaining two bodies, and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) has been pressed into the search operations. 



AP students drowning death: CM expresses grief


In the aftermath of the incident, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister (CM) Chandrababu Naidu expressed grief over the death of the students and has directed officials to ramp up the rescue efforts. He also assured that the state government would stand by the bereaved families during the tough times.



Police say students mistook river’s depth


A senior police official told the media that all the victims were enrolled at a private university in state capital Amrawati. They had dived into the river for a bath and presumed that the water was shallow. However, they were caught in deeper currents and met the ill-fate. The official went on to say that two students managed to escape as they knew how to swim, while five others resigned to their fate.

Recovered bodies sent for autopsy, case registered


The investigators said that the bodies of three students were sent for post-mortem, and were later handed over to their kin. The police have registered a case under Section 194 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), which pertains to unnatural deaths.
