PM Modi Warns on LPG Crisis: “India Must Be Ready for Long-Term Challenge”
Expressing concern over the situation in West Asia in the Rajya Sabha, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the current situation is extremely worrying and is affecting the entire world. He explained that many ships are stranded in the Strait of Hormuz, affecting global trade and energy supplies. The PM clearly stated that the decision to close the strait is wrong and is having a serious impact on the world economy.The Prime Minister stated that India is in constant contact with Iran, Israel, and the United States regarding this crisis and is striving to find a solution through peace and dialogue. He also condemned attacks on civilian infrastructure and stated that dialogue is the only solution.He informed that more than 300,000 Indians have returned from Gulf countries due to this crisis. Furthermore, the government is continuously making efforts to bring ships carrying LPG and crude oil to India, and will import energy wherever possible.PM Modi said that India's refining capacity has increased and the country has sufficient oil reserves. He added that India currently imports energy from 41 countries, which maintains supply diversity.
Emphasis on 'Make in India' ships -
Emphasizing self-reliance in the shipping sector, the Prime Minister said that there is a need to increase focus on shipbuilding under the "Make in India" initiative. He noted that currently, more than 90% of India's business is conducted through foreign ships, which is not sustainable in the long term. The government has taken several steps in this direction, including the formation of various empowered groups and an allocation of ₹70,000 crore for shipbuilding.
