Malda Hostage Crisis update: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has stepped up its probe into the violent unrest which unfolded in West Bengal’s Malda district recently. The body secured custody of three key accused allegedly involved in holding seven judicial officers hostage earlier this month, officials said.
The accused trio, identified as Gulam Rabbani (Panchayat Member of the Indian Secular Front), Shahadat Hossain (Congress worker) and Asif Sheikh (District President of Chatra Parishad), was produced before a special NIA court in Kolkata on Monday. The court granted custody to the agency till April 18, following a plea by them for extended interrogation.

Conspiracy alleged behind violent protest
According to the NIA, preliminary findings point towards the fact that the trio played a pivotal role in orchestrating the protest, which spiralled into violence on April 1 in Mothabari. Investigators are suspecting the demonstration was not spontaneous, but was a result of pre-planned mobilisation.
Officials alleged that the accused conducted several meetings beforehand to strategise and gather a large crowd at the Block Development Office. CCTV footage placed all three accused at the scene during the escalation.

The situation took a grave turn when demonstrators surrounded the BDO office, trapping seven judicial officers inside. The accused, as per investigators, blocked exit routes, preventing the officials from leaving the premises.

Probe expands as cell phones seized for forensic analysis
As part of the probe, five cell phones have been seized and have been sent for forensic analysis. Officials are currently examining the Call Detail Records (CDRs) to trace communication patterns leading up to the incident. Sources suggest that further interrogation will extend to the persons linked to the accused, as the agency attempts to unearth a broader network behind the mobilisation.

The unrest has flared political tensions across West Bengal, as competing narratives are emerging from rival parties. While the investigators have claimed that the accused have admitted involvement during preliminary questioning, these assertions remain subject to judicial scrutiny. Authorities, meanwhile, are facing mounting pressure to establish accountability and prevent such potential incidents in the future.
