Guwahati heavy rains: Heavy and continuous rainfall over the past 24 hours has lashed Guwahati city in Assam. The situation is likely to worsen, as the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has sounded a fresh alert for more downpours across the state.
On Monday, the weather body noted that Guwahati had logged 117.4 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, reaching a record-high for a single day in April since 1951. Notably, the city had last marked a rainfall record for the April month in 2004, where the figures stood at 116.5 mm. The weather office has warned of a surge in the intensity of the ongoing pre-monsoon activity in the region.

As per IMD officials, the inclement weather will likely persist in the state for the upcoming two to three days. It said various parts of Assam could see heavy to very heavy rainfall. Continuing the statements, the weather officials attributed the monsoon-like conditions to active weather systems, coupled with upper air circulations over Northeast Assam and adjoining areas.The latest report issued by the IMD suggested light to moderate rainfall occurred at most places of the state, while heavy to very heavy rains battered isolated locations in the past 24 hours. The forecast has warned of other conditions like gusty winds blowing at 40-50 kmph in some areas, thunderstorms and lightning. Normal life disrupted in Guwahati

The city reeled under heavy rains as waterlogging ensued in some areas, such as Hatigaon and Anil Nagar. In light of the same, all government and private educational institutions falling under the Guwahati Municipal Corporation (GMC) remained shut, after receiving directives from the district administration.
A resident of the city told news agency ANI that even a 10-minute-long rain spell causes his area of residence to get submerged in water. He also requested state Chief Minister (CM) Himanta Biswa Sarma to look into the issue and rectify the waterlogging issue in his area.
