India’s hopes of reclaiming the prestigious Thomas Cup 2026 title were dashed on Saturday, as France delivered a commanding 3-0 victory in the sem-final clash, which took place in Horsen, Denmark. India settled for a bronze medal finish, falling short of replicating their historic triumph in 2022.

Lakshya Sen’s injury dents India’s campaign

A visual after the clash ends

India’s chances of dominating the tournament were dented even before the tie kicked off, as their top-ranked singles player Lakshya Sen had to bow out due to an elbow injury, which he sustained during his quarter-final victory against Chinese Taipei. His absence left a void in the Indian line-up, making the task against a confident French side a difficult chapter.

France take early lead, Popov dominates

In the opening singles clash, Ayush Shetty struggled to cope with the pace and precision of World Number 4, Christo Popov. The French shuttler dictated play from the outset, clinching a comprehensive 21-11, 21-9 victory to hand France an early advantage.

Srikanth tries to hold his nerve, falls despite fighting back

Veteran campaigner Kidambi Srikanth then faced World Number 10, Alex Lanier in the second clash. While he tried his best to hold his nerve, Lanier held his composure during crucial points to claim a straight-games win of 21-16, 21-18, pushing India to the brink.

Prannoy falters in must-win clash

With the tie on the line, HS Prannoy stepped up in a must-win clash against Toma Junior Popov. He fiercely contested the opening game, but narrowly trailed 19-21 after a late surge from his opponent.

The momentum gradually shifted in France’s favour in the second game. Prannoy was unable to defend Popov’s attacking play, eventually going down 21-16 as France sealed an emphatic 3-0 victory, sparking jubilant celebrations.

India’s run ends in semi-finals

Notably, India had stormed into the semi-finals on a high, having convincingly defeated Chinese Taipei 3-0 in the quarter finals. Yet, a key player’s absence and France’s clinical execution proved decisive in the last-four encounter.

Despite the setback, India’s bronze medal finish reflects a commendable campaign, even as questions arise over squad depth and injury management at the highest level of competition.
