A horrifying incident unfolded in Telangana’s capital Hyderabad on Friday, where a 37-year-old woman allegedly leaped from the sixth floor of her residential apartment while carrying her six-month-old infant daughter in her arms, the police said on Saturday. Following the incident, the woman died, but the infant miraculously survived with only minor injuries, in what police have described as an extraordinary turn of events.

The woman who took the drastic step has been identified as Isha Sahu, a native of Madhya Pradesh, who had been living in Hyderabad with her family. The incident took place at 3:45 pm on Friday, drawing response from locals and police officials.

Infant landed on fence, survives

According to the investigating police personnel, the six-month-old baby girl survived after landing on a protective fence structure before reaching the ground. The fence is believed to have reduced the impact of the fall significantly, ultimately saving the infant’s life.

Residents who saw the aftermath rushed the baby to a nearby hospital for treatment. Doctors and medical professionals attending the baby said she is stable and out of danger.

The infant, named Vani, remains under observation as doctors continue to monitor her recovery, as per police sources.

Reason behind Sahu’s extreme step

Police sources added that Sahu had reportedly been grappling with severe insomnia, anxiety and symptoms linked to post-partum depression for several months. The cops are examining whether these factors may have pushed her into taking the extreme step.

When the incident transpired, Sahu’s other family members were present inside the apartment. Sahu has left behind her husband, a private company employee, and their two daughters (Vidi, 8, and infant Vani). The couple had been married for 11 years.

“The exact circumstances surrounding Sahu’s suicide are being ascertained,” a police official said.
