Malayalam superstar Mohanlal is riding on the success of ‘Drishyam 3,’ which has breached the Rs 200 crore mark at the global box office within just seven days of its release. The film marked a triumphant return for one of Indian cinema’s most beloved thriller franchises and has emerged as one of the biggest Malayalam blockbusters of the year, drawing packed theatres and rave audience reactions across markets.

Mohanlal thanks fans on ‘X’

The film’s lead actor, Mohanlal, shared a heartfelt poster on ‘X’ featuring Georgekutty and his family, reflecting on the emotional journey which began a decade ago.

His post read, “Three films. Three chapters. One unbroken bond. Thank you for walking with Georgekutty and Family. #Drishyam3.” 

Notably, the Jeethu Joseph directorial serves as the concluding chapter of the critically acclaimed trilogy. The film received a theatrical release on May 21, 2026, coinciding with Mohanlal’s birthday, adding to the celebratory atmosphere surrounding the launch.

Film’s cast

In the third instalment too, Mohanlal reprises his role as Georgekutty, the seemingly ordinary cable operator, who deploys intelligence and survival instincts to emerge as a household name in Indian cinema’s most memorable characters. The film also features actors from the first two prequels, namely, Meena, Ansiba Hassan, Esther Anil, Siddique and Asha Sarath, all returning to reprise their roles. 

The film has been presented by Pen Studios and Panorama Studios, and has been produced by Antony Perumbavoor. 

Franchise continues its dominance as an audience puller

The ‘Drishyam’ franchise has been enjoying cult status since its inception, for its gripping storytelling, layered suspense and unexpected twists. The story is centred on Georgekutty and his family, as they become entangled in a tense investigation after the son of a senior police officer vanishes abruptly. 

The first film of the franchise, a 2013-release, became a landmark one in Malayalam cinema and later inspired successful remarks in several languages such as Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Sinhala. Its sequel premiered in 2021, further strengthening the franchise’s popularity and critical acclaim.
