President Droupadi Murmu on Sunday urged young graduates to use their education, talent and determination not merely for personal success but for the greater good of society. Addressing the 36th Convocation Ceremony of Rani Durgavati University in Jabalpur as the chief guest, the President said the dreams of a developed India would be realised through the knowledge, energy and commitment of the country’s youth.

Encouraging students to remain connected to grassroots realities, she asked them to understand the challenges faced by underprivileged communities and rural populations. “Empower them, help solve their problems, and play an active role in bringing them into the mainstream of development,” she said. The President also reminded the graduating students that while many of them would go on to occupy important positions in public life, they would also shoulder significant responsibilities towards society.

Medals, degrees awarded to outstanding scholars
The convocation witnessed the recognition of academic excellence across various disciplines. A total of 240 gold medals were awarded to as many as 141 meritorious students. President Murmu personally conferred 20 gold medals upon selected achievers.
In addition, 182 research scholars were awarded PhD degrees. Three scholars received D.Litt degrees, while one scholar was conferred a D.Sc degree. Renowned journalist and Padma Shri awardee Vijaydutt Shridhar was honoured with an honorary degree. Undergraduate and postgraduate students from different faculties were also awarded their respective degrees during the ceremony.
Murmu pays tribute to Rani Durgavati’s legacy
Speaking on the occasion, President Murmu paid homage to the legendary Queen Rani Durgavati, after whom the university is named. She described the Gondwana ruler as a symbol of unmatched courage, valour and sacrifice.
Recalling that the nation celebrated the 501st birth anniversary of the warrior queen last year, the President noted that her martyrdom day would be observed in the coming days. She said Rani Durgavati remains an enduring inspiration for women’s empowerment and a shining example of India’s rich legacy of female leadership.

The President further emphasised that the true significance of the university’s name would be realised only when efforts are made to empower girls from tribal, marginalised and backward communities.
CM Dr Yadav Highlights Government’s Focus on Education
On the occasion, CM Dr Mohan Yadav said the state government remains firmly committed to the welfare and advancement of students. He highlighted that Madhya Pradesh has revived elements of India’s ancient academic traditions by adopting the term “Kulguru” for university vice-chancellors.
The Chief Minister stated that the Gross Enrolment Ratio in higher education has risen to 28.9 per cent due to sustained government efforts. He also claimed that the school education dropout rate in the state has fallen to zero.

CM Dr Yadav then announced that the government has initiated efforts to establish three new state universities and is continuously working to expand access to quality higher education. He added that agricultural faculties have been introduced in universities and several new courses launched to strengthen skill development among young people.
Congratulating the medal winners and degree recipients, the Chief Minister expressed confidence that under the leadership of Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, India would continue its rapid march towards progress and development.
