A 17-year-old boy, a medical aspirant, allegedly died by suicide on Tuesday after learning that the NEET UG 2026 exam had been cancelled by the exam conducting agency NTA, the police reported on Thursday. The teenager, according to police, was a resident of Nesai in Curtorim and hailed from Bengaluru. He was a higher secondary school student in the Margao region, and was discovered hanging at his house on Tuesday, senior police officials said.

According to reports, the boy was alone at his house when he took the extreme step. His mother and sister had gone to their hometown, while his father, who works as a security guard in railways, was on duty.

Here’s what the student wrote in his suicide note

The police were called to the scene, who recovered a suicide note from the spot. Upon going through the suicide note, the cops learnt that he was in deep distressed over academic expectations. Police sources revealed that the teenager wrote he did not wish to appear for competitive exams again, underscoring the immense pressure he had been reeling under.

As per a preliminary probe conducted by police, the cancellation of NEET UG 2026 and the prospect of having to undergo the rigorous preparation, as well as testing process once more, may have contributed to his decision.

NEET UG cancellation amid leak probe

The NTA on Tuesday announced that the NEET UG 2026 exam, which had been conducted nationwide on May 3, 2026, was cancelled, following serious allegations of a question paper leak. Notably, now the probe is being handled by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which has unearthed a suspected network involved in circulating leaked exam papers across multiple states.

Officials said they have invoked cases pertaining to criminal conspiracy and cheating against the accused, signalling a large-scale breach in the integrity of India’s one of most competitive medical entrance exams.

Protests erupted after NEET UG 2026 leak

The network, according to CBI officials, is believed to have extended across several states, such as Haryana, Uttarakhand and Rajasthan.
