WhatsApp username feature rollout: Messaging giant WhatsApp is rolling out a major feature aimed at concealing their phone numbers. The platform is testing a username-based system, enabling people to chat, call and communicate without revealing their phone numbers. The feature is currently available to a limited group of users on both Android and iOS, and is designed to enhance privacy while preserving WhatsApp’s seamless user experience.

Users can connect with others using search feature
As per reports by WABetaInfo, the new functionality allows users to create unique usernames linked to their accounts. Once enabled, individuals can search for and connect with others using these usernames instead of mobile phone numbers. The feature’s rollout marks a significant shift for WhatsApp, which has traditionally relied on phone numbers as the primary identifier. As per tech experts, the change is expected to offer users greater control over who can access their contact details.

Currently, the feature is in a testing phase and is accessible only to a select number of users. To check eligibility, users need to navigate to their profile settings within the app. The ones included in the test group will find a dedicated ‘username’ option. After selecting it, they can create a unique ID through a guided, step-by-step process. Once they set their usernames, it becomes linked to their account and can be shared in place of a phone number.
Rules, requirements to set username
WhatsApp has announced clear guidelines for creating usernames to ensure consistency and security, as given below:
- Usernames cannot begin with “www.” or end with domain extension like “.com” or “.net”
- The users must include at least one letter
- Only lowercase letters (a-z), numbers (0-9) and underscores are permitted
- The username must contain at least 3 characters and a maximum of 35 characters
Integration enabled across Meta platforms

The feature is also aligned with other platforms linked to Meta. If a username is already in use on other Meta-owned platforms like Instagram or Facebook, users will need to verify ownership through the Accounts Center before claiming it on WhatsApp. If widely rolled out, the feature could redefine how billions of users connect, making phone numbers optional rather than essential.
