The rules for visiting Uttarakhand's famous shrines of Badrinath and Kedarnath have now been tightened.

The Badri-Kedar Temple Committee (BKTC) has issued new guidelines, stating that Non-Hindu devotees must submit an affidavit of faith in Sanatan Dharma to enter. Furthermore, entry to 45 other temples in the Garhwal region under the committee's jurisdiction has been completely prohibited for non-Hindus.

Decision taken to save traditions -

BKTC chief Hemant Dwivedi said that this step has been taken with the aim of preserving religious traditions. He stated that Sanatana Dharma is vast and has followers worldwide. He also clarified that if a person of any religion professes faith in Sanatana Dharma and
provides an affidavit, they may be allowed to visit. These rules will also apply to celebrity visits. The committee stated that if a celebrity like Sara Ali Khan

wishes to visit,

she will have to follow the same process and submit an affidavit of faith.

Difference between Tourism and Religious tourism -

The committee said that these guidelines are based on the traditions associated with Adi Shankaracharya and have been followed for a long time. The committee also stressed the need to differentiate between tourism and pilgrimage. Dwivedi said, "Tourism and religious tourism are the backbone of the state's economy.

Unfortunately,

some people fail to distinguish between the two and mistake religious tourism for normal tourism. We must take steps to ensure that rules and traditions are followed during pilgrimages, and this initiative is a small step in that direction Prohibition on Mobile phones and photography inside the temple premises - Under the new guidelines, mobile phones are also prohibited within the temple premises. Arrangements are being made for devotees to store their mobile phones outside. Photography and Videography will also be strictly
prohibited within the temple complex.

Chardham Yatra New Rules 2026:

All these rules have been implemented ahead of the upcoming Chardham Yatra. This year, the pilgrimage will begin on April 19th, when the doors of the Yamunotri and Gangotri temples open. Online registration began on March 6th, and over 600,000 devotees have registered so far, with the highest number for Kedarnath.
