Ace Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat’s career is at a crossroads after the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) served her a show-cause notice on Saturday. In the 15-page notice, the wrestling body accused her of breaching numerous disciplinary and regulatory norms, barring her from competing in domestic events until June 26, 2026, pending further proceedings.

The Federation alleged that Phogat’s conduct amounted to indiscipline and breaches of anti-doping norms, adding that it triggered ‘National Embarrassment’ and tarnished the Indian wrestling’s image.

Details of the notice

The notice issued by WFI mentioned that Phogat failed to comply with the six-month notice period required for athletes returning from retirement, as mandated under the United World Wrestling (UWW) anti-doping regulations. Further, it claimed that she violated provisions outlined in the WFI constitution, UWW International Wrestling Rules and National Anti-Doping guidelines. The body has given her a period of 14 days to respond to the charges and present her defence.

Paris Olympics disqualifications under scrutiny

One of the allegations pertains to her disqualification at the 2024 Summer Olympics held in Paris, where she failed to meet the weight requirements ahead of the final in the 50 kg category. WFI termed the episode a moment that brought disrepute to the country on a global stage.

Besides this, the federation has sought clarification regarding her participation in two weight categories during the March 2024 selection trials conducted by an ad-hoc panel appointed by the Indian Olympic Association.

Phogat asked to explain anti-doping lapses

In the notice, WFI also voiced concerns about Phogat’s alleged failure to disclose her exact whereabouts, a key requirement under the anti-doping regulations. It said such lapses, if proven, could constitute grave violations under international sporting rules.

The wrestling body warned that Phogat’s failure to respond within the stipulated time frame could result in ex-parte proceedings, and the decisions taken thereafter will be based on available evidence.

Phogat’s comeback impeded amid ongoing row

Notably, Phogat had announced her retirement from the sport after the Paris Olympics heartbreak, before rescinding her decision in December 2025. She was expected to make a comeback at the National Open Ranking Tournament set to be held in UP’s Gonda from May 10 to 12, 2026.

However, she has been ruled out of the event, as well as all forthcoming national and international competitions, given the suspension imposed on her by WFI, which shall remain under WFI’s purview until late June 2026.
