The Supreme Court of India on Monday, while hearing the death case of former actor-model Twisha Sharma, urged her family as well as in-laws to refrain from making any statements publicly, as the probe into her death deepens. A bench of the top court, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Surya Kant, Justices Joymalya Bagchi and Vipul M Pancholi, also emphasised the need for a fair and an impartial probe free from ‘premature impressions.’

Sharma (33), was found hanging at her matrimonial residence in Bhopal’s Katara Hills area on May 12, 2026, triggering widespread outrage. The ruckus intensified after her family accused her husband, advocate Samarth Singh, as well as her mother-in-law, Giribala Singh, an ex-district judge, of dowry harassment and abetment to suicide.
“Let law take its course”: Bench
The apex court, which had taken suo motu cognisance of the incident on Saturday, observed that both the families had ‘unnecessarity’ been approaching the media during the sensitive stage of the probe.
The bench remarked, “We are slightly in pain because of some of the actions,” while also urging media organisations to exercise restraint while reporting the developments in the case. It added that statements made publicly by either side could influence perceptions before the probe reaches a conclusion.

Furthermore, the judges advised both families to record their statements before the investigating agency rather than engaging in public exchanges.
Top court objects to narrative around ‘judiciary’
During the proceedings, the bench also reacted sharply to suggestions that the judicial system was being manipulated because Twisha’s mother-in-law, Giribala had served as a district judge earlier. The bench noted, “The mother-in-law is a former district judge, and it is unfortunate that it is being said the judiciary is derailing the trial. We are against the narrative that is being created.”
Meanwhile, the counsel appearing for the Singh family assured the court that Giribala would avoid speaking to the media regarding the case. Reiterating that the focus must remain on unbiased investigation, the court described the incident as both ‘unfortunate’ and ‘sensational.’

CBI probe picks pace
Notably, the probe in the case has now been transferred to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Samarth Singgh, who had been untraceable since May 12, was arrested last Friday after he surrendered at the Jabalpur district court. He had also withdrawn his anticipatory bail plea from the MP High Court (HC).
