The ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) account of the rapidly emerging Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) was withheld in India on Thursday, just hours after the satirical youth-driven movement overtook the BJP’s official Instagram account in terms of followers. The dramatic development has intensified the buzz surrounding the meme-fuelled political campaign, which swiftly transformed from an internet joke into one of the country’s most-talked about digital movements.

Founder shares update

CJP’s founder Abhijeet Dipke confirmed the blocking of the account on ‘X’. He shared a screenshot indicating that the handle had been withheld in India. Reacting to the development, Dipke wrote, “As expected, the Cockroach Janata Party’s account has been withheld in India.” The timing of the restriction took the internet by a storm, particularly as the movement had recorded explosive growth over the past few days.

The movement initially began as an online satire campaign rapidly transformed into a broader expression of youth frustration surrounding unemployment, competitive exam paper leaks, institutional accountability and the tone of political discourse in India.

CJP surpasses BJP on Instagram

The controversy erupted shortly after the CJP breaches the 10 million follower mark on Instagram, surpassing the official handle of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which currently has close to 8.7 million followers on the platform. Meanwhile, the Indian National Congress (INC) continues to lead among Indian political outfits with more than 13 million followers, while the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) trails in terms of social media reach.

CJP had adopted the slogan, ‘Secular, Socialist, Democratic, Lazy’ while positioning itself as a ‘political front of the youth, by the youth, for the youth. Its blend of humour, sarcasm, memes and political commentary has resonated strongly with the country’s young audiences, helping it gain extraordinary traction in a remarkably short period.

Origins rooted in CJI’s cockroach remark row

The handle’s unusual name, ‘Cockroach Janata Party’ emerged after the Chief Justice of India, Surya Kant made controversial remarks directed at the country’s youth during a court hearing last week. He said that some unemployed youth and digital activists were functioning like ‘cockroaches’ and ‘parasites’, who often attack the system. Although he clarified later that his remarks had been misquoted and were aimed only at people using fake degrees to enter professions, the clarification did little to slow the movement’s momentum online.

Dipke (30), an alumnus of Boston University and a former social media campaign worker for the AAP, later said that the remarks became the emotional trigger behind the movement.
