As the sequel to the 2009-blockbuster, “3 Idiots” appears to be taking shape, excitement is building among cinema lovers. Recently, the film’s lead actor Aamir Khan revealed that the sequel is in the works, with acclaimed filmmaker Rajkumar Hirani already engaged in the project.

Recently, several reports have emerged, claiming that actor Vicky Kaushal is in advanced talks to join the second instalment of the franchise, potentially as a ‘fourth idiot.’ Notably, the iconic trio, Rancho, Farhan and Raju, was portrayed by Aamir Khan, R Madhavan and Sharman Joshi in the original film, and they are set to reprise their roles in the sequel too.

Vicky Kaushal

Kaushal has expressed strong interest in the role: Sources

Sources privy to the development said that Kaushal has already read the script and has expressed his desire to join the project. His character is likely to introduce a fresh emotional arc while complementing the established narrative.

Industry insiders have also chipped in, saying that multiple meetings have taken place between Khan, Hirani and Kaushal, with the actor reportedly giving a nod verbally. However, scheduling the coordination among the ensemble cast is still a key factor before Kaushal is signed for the film.

Story to take a 10-year leap

During the interview, Khan revealed that the sequel’s story will revisit the lives of the three friends nearly a decade after the events of its predecessor. He also said the script is really ‘good,’ highlighting it would be packed with humour and an evolved narrative.

Furthermore, Khan also heaped praise on writers Abhijat Joshi and Rajkumar Hirani for crafting a compelling storyline that builds on the legacy of the first film.

Iconic trio from 3 Idiots

Original film too boasted a stellar cast

The original film, “3 Idiots” also featured a stellar cast, including Boman Irani, Kareena Kapoor Khan and Mona Singh. The film garnered widespread recognition in India and abroad for its sharp critique of the Indian education system.

If confirmed, Kaushal’s entry could mark a significant expansion of the franchise, blending nostalgia with fresh story narration.
