The Madhya Pradesh Government is set to organise a series of programmes across the state to commemorate the 125th birth anniversary year of Dr Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, one of the founding figures of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The commemorative events will be held from June 23 to July 6, 2026, with state Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav directing local bodies to ensure widespread public participation and awareness.

The Chief Minister issued the instructions during a virtual meeting with mayors of municipal corporations and presidents of municipal councils from his official residence. During the interaction, Dr Yadav emphasised the enduring relevance of Dr Mukherjee’s ideals and his contribution to national unity and integrity.

Tribute to a leader dedicated to national integration

Speaking during the meeting, CM Dr Yadav said that Dr Mukherjee devoted his life to strengthening India's unity and safeguarding its territorial integrity. He noted that the veteran leader consistently placed the nation’s interests above all else and worked tirelessly towards national integration.

The Chief Minister described the upcoming fortnight-long observance as an opportunity to acquaint citizens, particularly the younger generation, with the life and legacy of a leader whose vision continues to inspire public service and patriotism.

Remembering his supreme sacrifice

Dr Mukherjee passed away on June 23, 1953, a date that is widely remembered by his supporters as a symbol of his ultimate sacrifice in the national interest. He had launched a movement against the special constitutional arrangement that existed in Jammu and Kashmir at the time.

His death is regarded by many as a defining moment in India’s political history and a powerful symbol of national consciousness. The state government plans to begin the commemorative fortnight on his death anniversary, culminating on July 6, his birth anniversary.

Dr Mukherjee was not only a prominent political leader but also an acclaimed educationist, thinker, parliamentarian and visionary statesman. His contributions continue to be cited in discussions on nation-building and governance.

Focus on youth outreach, public awareness

As part of the observance, tribute ceremonies, seminars and thought forums will be organised throughout Madhya Pradesh. CM Dr Yadav directed officials and local representatives to ensure that Dr Mukherjee’s ideas and principles are disseminated extensively among the public.

He stressed that the primary objective of the fortnight should be to take Dr Mukherjee’s message to every section of society. The Chief Minister added that the celebrations should conclude with a broad-based campaign to spread awareness about his life, ideals and contributions, thereby inspiring young people to dedicate themselves to the service of the nation.
