Mahanatya Samrat Vikramaditya Varanasi: The Madhya Pradesh government’s ambitious cultural initiative, ‘Vikramotsav 2026’ is set to resonate in UP’s Varanasi, as the grand theatrical production, ‘Mahanatya Samrat Vikramaditya; will be staged there from April 3 to April 5, 2026. As part of the initiative, MP Chief Minister (CM) Dr Mohan Yadav is expected to travel to Varanasi on April 3, and address an event there. Organised under the ‘Vikramotsav 2026’ campaign, the event is aimed at celebrating India’s rich knowledge, traditions and cultural legacy on a wider platform.

CM’s vision strengthens cultural nationalism


As per a statement by the Department of Public Relations (DPR) of MP, CM Dr Yadav’s vision has played a pivotal role in taking the cultural journey from Ujjain, the home to Lord Mahakal, to Varanasi, the sacred town of Lord Vishwanath. The initiative taken by CM Dr Yadav underscores a broader effort to strengthen cultural nationalism and revive India’s historical consciousness.



3-day theatrical performance to outline King’s victory over Shakas


CM Dr Yadav described emperor Vikramaditya as more than just a ruler, and highlighted his enduring legacy as a symbol of justice, valour and good governance. The 3-day theatrical spectacle will depict Vikramaditya’s victory over the Shakas nearly 2,100 years ago and the establishment of the Vikram Samvat calendar, considered as one of the world’s oldest timekeeping systems, reflecting India’s excellence in science and astronomy.

Mahanatya Samrat Vikramaditya Varanasi: Highlight of the event


A key highlight of the performance will be the depiction of the ‘Navratna’ court of the emperor. It will feature eminent scholars such as Kalidasa, Varahamihira and Dhanvantari. Their contributions will be showcased in the skit as part of a broader narrative emphasising the idea of a ‘Great India.’ Notably, the event held in Delhi drew praise from Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi, and the Varanasi edition is expected to set new benchmarks.
