The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has resorted to disciplinary action against Rajasthan Royals’ (RR) captain, Riyan Parag, after he was spotted vaping inside the dressing room during his team’s clash with Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 . Notably, the incident was captured on live broadcast and quickly gained traction on social media, drawing flak and calls for strict action.

BCCI released an official statement, confirming that Parag had breached the IPL Code of Conduct, and imposed a penalty on him. He has been fined 25% of his match fee and was handed one demerit point for a Level 1 offence. 

Incident unfolded in IPL’s match number 40

According to the BCCI, Parag was found to have breached Article 2.21 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which pertains to behaviour that brings the game into disrepute. It is noteworthy that the incident took place during the second innings of the Match no. 40 of the IPL, when the young cricketer was seen smoking a vape inside the dressing room. 

As the incident appeared on live feed, it drew immediate attention, placing the cricketer under scrutiny for violating the established protocols. Smoking or vaping in dressing rooms and enclosed stadium areas is strictly prohibited, as per the protocol. 

Parag admits to offence

In reply, Parag admitted to the offence and accepted the penalty imposed by match referee Amit Sharma. Sources aware of the development said that besides the penalty, the player was also issued a warning. 

Meanwhile, the row has also escalated in light of India’s strict regulations on e-cigarettes under the Prohibition of Electronic Cigarettes Act 2019. As per the legislation, the production, sale, advertisement and purchase of vaping devices has been prohibited, and its violation attracts severe penalties, including fines and a jail term. 

BCCI mulls further action

The cricket body has also indicated that it is exploring additional measures to ensure that the league’s integrity remains uncompromised. In its statement, the board emphasised the need to uphold the reputation of the IPL and hinted at imminent proceedings involving Rajasthan Royals, as well as its officials.
