The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Congress again sparred over on Saturday, after senior Congress leader and Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, took a pointed swipe at Prime Minister (PM) Narendra Modi. On the social media platform ‘X’, Gandhi wrote, “PM Modi personally supervised the NEET paper leak,” while various posts on 'X', made by media outfits quoted the Centre telling the Supreme Court, “PM Modi is personally monitoring the NEET paper leak issue.”

Gandhi’s comments drew immediate response from senior BJP leaders. 

Hearing at SC triggers political storm

The latest row erupted after the Supreme Court was hearing petitions related to the NEET UG 2026 paper leak issue, and the Union government was asked to provide details regarding the progress of the probe into the same. 

During the proceedings, Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Apex court that the Prime Minister was personally monitoring issues related to the probe. His submission to the court attracted political attention quickly, with opposition leaders interpreting it as an indication of the PM’s direct involvement in overseeing developments linked to the case.

Gandhi jibes PM Modi

Reacting to reports from the court hearing, Gandhi launched an attack on the Prime Minister. Taking to ‘X’, he wrote, “PM Modi also personally supervised the NEET paper leak,” as a satirical dig at the Centre over the controversy.

Notably, Gandhi launched numerous attacks on the Union government after reports of the NEET UG 2026 paper leak emerged, and also demanded resignation from Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan. His latest jibe quickly gained traction online, and BJP leaders as well as supporters were quick to respond to his post.

BJP accuses Gandhi of misrepresenting facts

Senior BJP leader Amit Malviya criticised the Congress MP, saying that it was unreasonable to interpret Solicit General Mehta’s submission as an admission that the PM had any role in the paper leak itself. 

BJP spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi also entered the debate, arguing that Gandhi had misread the context of the court submission. 

In a social media post, Trivedi claimed that the Congress leader had failed to distinguish between PM Modi supervising the broader issue and supervising the alleged leak itself. He accused Gandhi of selectively interpreting the statement and using it for political mileage.
