In a major move aimed at strengthening law enforcement and public safety, the Madhya Pradesh Police has announced plans to install nearly one lakh Artificial Intelligence (AI)-enabled cameras across the state. The decision was taken during a high level review meeting chaired by Director General of Police (DGP) Kailash Makwana on June 15, 2026 who also directed officials to intensify anti-drug measures, improve police welfare, and enhance legal support systems for police personnel.

The ambitious surveillance initiative is expected to transform policing by enabling real-time monitoring, improving crime detection, and strengthening security infrastructure in both urban and rural areas. Officials believe the AI-powered camera network will play a crucial role in identifying suspicious activities, tracking criminals, managing traffic, and assisting investigations through advanced analytics.

One Lakh AI Cameras to Strengthen Security Network

Addressing senior police officials during the review meeting, DGP Kailash Makwana emphasized the need for technology-driven policing to meet modern security challenges. The proposed installation of one lakh AI-based cameras is expected to significantly improve surveillance capabilities across the state. The cameras will be deployed at strategic locations, including public spaces, major roads, marketplaces, and sensitive areas.

Authorities believe the technology will help law enforcement agencies respond more efficiently to criminal incidents while improving overall public safety. The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize the police force and integrate advanced technologies into daily operations.

Strict Action Against Drugs Near Educational Institutions

The state police have also announced stricter measures to combat drug-related activities, particularly around schools and colleges. During the meeting, DGP Makwana directed officials to declare a 500-meter radius around educational institutions as Drug-Free Zones. The move is aimed at preventing the sale, distribution, and consumption of narcotic substances near campuses and protecting students from the growing threat of substance abuse.

Police units across the state have been instructed to strengthen surveillance and enforcement in these sensitive areas. Officials said awareness campaigns and coordinated action with local authorities will also be undertaken to ensure effective implementation of the new measures.

'Nashe Se Doori Hai Zaroori 2.0' Campaign from July 15

As part of the state's anti-drug strategy, the Madhya Pradesh Police will launch the second phase of its awareness initiative, "Nashe Se Doori Hai Zaroori 2.0," from July 15 to July 31, 2026. The campaign will focus on educating young people about the dangers of substance abuse while encouraging community participation in preventing drug-related crimes. Schools, colleges, social organizations, and local administrations are expected to play a key role in spreading awareness during the campaign period.

Focus on Police Health and Legal Support

Apart from law enforcement measures, DGP Makwana also stressed the importance of police welfare. He directed officials to pay special attention to the health of police personnel and ensure timely resolution of legal matters involving officers performing official duties. Senior officials noted that improving the well-being of police personnel is essential for maintaining an efficient and motivated force capable of handling increasing responsibilities.
