A tractor-trailer ferrying villagers turned turtle near the Umaria-Anuppur border in Madhya Pradesh on Saturday morning, claiming four lives and rendering 37 others injured, officials said. The incident unfolded in Bijora village, which lies under the jurisdiction of the Karan Patha police station area. 

Officials said that around 41 villagers from the Padmaniya village were onboard the vehicle to Bijora village to offer prayers at a local temple. While passing near Sani Dham, the vehicle lost control and overturned on the road. Several passengers were trapped beneath the heavy trailer, prompting an immediate rescue operation.

Identities of the victims

Authorities said two people lost their lives on the spot, while two others succumbed to their injuries at the hospital. The ones who died have been identified as Ghanshyam God, Veer Singh (50), Bhupat Singh (50) and Sahbal Baiga. According to officials, efforts are underway to verify the identities of all victims and complete the formalities. 

Meanwhile, 37 people sustained injuries in the incident. The ones who were injured comprised 22 men, 14 women and five children. They were rushed to nearby medical facilities for treatment post-incident. 

Rescue teams spring into action

Upon receipt of the information, cops from the Pali police station, administrative officials and health department teams rushed to the site. They launched an immediate operation to pull the passengers trapped beneath the vehicle and rush them to the hospital.

MP CM Dr Mohan Yadav expressed profound grief over the tragedy. In a statement posted on ‘X’, he termed the incident ‘extremely distressing’. Furthermore, he extended his condolences to the bereaved families and announced a solatium of Rs 4 lakh each to the kin of the deceased. He further informed that the injured are being treated and prayed for their speedy recovery.
