Police have solved the murder of a young factory worker whose decomposed body was found near a culvert in the Katara Hills area of Bhopal last month. Investigators say the accused allegedly killed the victim after an attempted sexual assault and later fled with his mobile phone.

The accused, identified as Ajay Mayna, was arrested on Wednesday following an investigation that traced the victim’s missing mobile device. Police said the victim, a Bhopal resident employed at a factory in Mandideep, was found dead near Ecological Park on May 24.

The body was several days old when discovered, making identification difficult. After establishing the victim’s identity, police launched a detailed investigation and registered a murder case based on post-mortem findings that revealed severe head injuries.

Mobile Tracking Cracks the Case

According to police, a major breakthrough came when investigators discovered that the victim’s mobile phone was missing. Technical surveillance helped trace the handset to a man who claimed he had purchased it from Ajay Mayna. Police subsequently detained Mayna for questioning. During interrogation, he allegedly confessed to the crime and revealed details about the incident.

Investigators said the accused told them he had been roaming around various parts of the city on the night of the crime looking for a companion. After spending time in areas such as New Market and VIP Road without success, he was returning to his home in Misrod when he encountered the victim.

Alleged Assault Attempt Turned Deadly

Police said the accused first offered food to the victim, who was reportedly under the influence of intoxicants. He then allegedly took him beneath a culvert near the Ecological Park area.

According to investigators, Mayna attempted to force himself on the victim. When the victim resisted, the accused allegedly attacked him with a stone, striking him on the head multiple times. The injuries proved fatal, and the victim died at the scene. After the killing, the accused allegedly took the victim’s mobile phone and fled.

Criminal History Under Investigation

Police have also revealed that Mayna has a prior criminal record. Officials said he had previously served jail time in a case involving similar allegations against another young man.

Authorities are now examining the accused’s criminal background and gathering information regarding his behavior and mental condition. The accused has undergone a medical examination and remains in police custody.

Officials said further evidence is being collected and that all aspects of the case are under investigation before the matter is presented in court.
