The incident unfolded late Thursday night, leaving her family and the locals in shock and disbelief.

Family details on academic pressure, emotional distress faced by student

Avantika’s father, Dr Banshi Maurya, who is a government medical officer, said he was attending a 6-day training programme at Indore’s MY Hospital when the incident transpired. He said, “It was around 11:30 pm on Thursday when some students living in the area informed us that Avantika had fallen from the building. She had left her cellphone in the rented flat while we were sleeping.”

Dr Maurya added that Avantika had taken the NEET UG exam thrice earlier, but had been unable to qualify it. He said she had been grappling with emotional strain in recent months, and was particularly affected by the cancellation of the May 3 exam, as well as the prospect of appearing for the re-test. “She was not eating regularly and had become emotionally withdrawn,” he further said.

Avantika succumbs to injuries in hospital

Following the incident, Avantika was rushed to a private hospital, and was later referred to the MY Hospital for advanced treatment. Despite medical intervention, she succumbed to her injuries in the early hours of Friday.

Her elder sister, Dr Sapna Maurya, recalled that Avantika had remained unusually incommunicative throughout Thursday and appeared worried about the upcoming NEET UG retest.

Her kin maintained that she remained committed to pursuing a career in medical sciences despite previous setbacks. One of her cousins, Harsha, said that Avatika believed she had performed well in the NEET UG 2026 exam held on May 3, which was later cancelled following allegations of a paper leak.

Police probe underway

A police official probing the incident said. “Investigations are underway to ascertain whether she fell from the building accidentally or otherwise. A forensic team has visited the crime scene, but no conclusive evidence has been found so far. We shall also examine her cell phone records as part of the probe.”
