Kin shed light on sequence of events

According to Monika’s kin, she had entered into a court marriage with one Anuj Chauhan on February 17, after being in a relationship with him. However, they claimed she was deceived into marrying him and was soon subjected to sustained pressure to transfer her property into their in-laws’ name.

One of her relatives, named Anil, alleged that the harassment began within two months of the alliance. He said, “Anuj married her for money. She was tortured to transfer land in their name.”

Family says Monika made distress call before death

Adding to the allegations, the family said that Monika made a distress call at around 2 pm on Thursday, informing them that Anuj and his family had been assaulting her physically. They claimed that during the call, she said she was being threatened to either transfer her land or ‘face death.’

Alarmed by the call, her mother rushed to Anuj’s place. By then, a large crowd had gathered outside the house. Monika’s kin added that Anuj was seen placing her body into a car amid the chaos. They followed the vehicle to a hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead upon arrival.

Anil said that the situation escalated when Monika’s relatives attempted to intervene. He added that Monika’s mother was attacked when she tried to stop Anuj’s vehicle, and the accused fled the scene.

The bereaving family has also voiced concerns over police’s response. They said that despite informing the cops, they were later told that Monika’s body had already been cremated, and only her remains had been sent for autopsy.

Furthermore, they alleged that they were not provided clear information about the exact condition of her body, and had to run from pillar to post to seek answers.
