TVK member sexually assaults minor girl in Chennai, held; court remands him to judicial custody
A 43-year-old man associated with actor-politician Vijay’s political party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has been arrested on charges of allegedly sexually assaulting a minor girl aged 10 in Chennai, the police said. The cops laid hands on the accused after the survivor’s kin filed a police complaint earlier this week.
Incident unfolds in Kasimedu
According to police, the incident took place, when the survivor girl, a resident of Mylapore area, had gone to see a relative at their house in Kasimedu Singaravelan Nagar under the RK Nagar constituency. While she was playing outside the house, the accused, identified as Dinesh, who also lived in the same area, allegedly took her to his house.
At his house, the accused allegedly violated the girl and threatened to kill her if she dared to reveal the incident to anyone. The survivor returned home and narrated her tale of woes to her aunt, following which her parents were apprised of the incident. They lodged a complaint at the Kasimedu police station on May 3, 2026.
Accused booked under POCSO Act
The police registered a case against the accused, Dinesh, under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act, and then transferred it to the Royapuram All Women Police station for further probe.
The police teams persevered in efforts to arrest the accused on May 4, but were unable to do so, as he was present at a vote-counting centre, supporting a TVK candidate contesting from the RK Nagar constituency. He, however, was traced and apprehended the same night. The cops produced him before a court, which remanded him to judicial custody.
As per police, the accused is being interrogated, and evidence is being collected to examine all aspects of the case.
The incident has sent shockwaves among local residents, especially at a time after TVK had a landslide mandate in the Tamil Nadu Assembly Polls 2026, winning 108 seats out of 234. The party, formed in 2024, emerged as frontrunners to form the government with party President Vijay favourite to become the next CM of Tamil Nadu.
