Punjab: Female doctor dies by suicide, family alleges abuse, multi-crore loan fraud at the hands of her husband
A married woman, who was a doctor by profession, was found dead under mysterious circumstances at her house in Punjab’s Jalandhar on Wednesday, the police reported on Thursday. According to police, she was found hanging in her room. In the aftermath of her alleged suicide, her family has blamed her estranged husband of domestic abuse, infidelity and financial misconduct.
As of now, the police have registered a case against the doctor’s husband, who too, is a doctor, and are probing the incident.
Woman identified as Dr Meenakshi
The woman who took the drastic step has been identified as Dr Meenakshi. She had reportedly been living separately from her husband, Dr Piyush. On Wednesday, she was found hanging at her house, and all doors of the house were locked from inside. The police had to break open the glass windows to gain access to the house.
The medical community across the city has been shaken by the incident, and the cops have mounted a probe into the case.
Kin accuse Dr Piyush of physical, mental harassment
Dr Meenakshi’s family told the police she endured years of mental and physical abuse at the hands of her husband, Dr Piyush. Notably, Piyush owns the National Eye Hospital in Jalandhar.
According to Dr Meenakshi’s kin, she had got married to Dr Piyush in October 2018. They claim the tensions in the marriage intensified after the female allegedly discovered her husband’s extramarital affair with a nurse employed at his hospital.
Her mother said Dr Meenakshi learnt of the affair after she reviewed the CCTV footage of the hospital and grew suspicious about Dr Piyush’s conduct. When Piyush came to know that his illicit relationship had been laid bare, he began subjecting Dr Meenakshi to repeated physical assaults.
The grieving mother further claimed that after such incidents, Dr Piyush would often contact her and admit to assaulting Dr Meenakshi, expressing regret over his actions.
Couple parted ways in 2025
Dr Meenakshi’s family members told the media she had parted ways with Dr Piysuh in July 2025, after she was drained by the relentless physical and mental torment. They added she had been mulling legal recourse and was exploring the possibility of filing for divorce.
However, her father reportedly advised her to delay court proceedings for some time. Relatives further said Meenakshi had been planning to purchase a house this month to rebuild her life independently.
Allegations of loan fraud surface
As a fresh twist to the case, the family alleged that Dr Meenakshi recently discovered her estranged husband had procured a loan of Rs 2.5 crore in her name. She made the discovery after visiting a bank regarding a housing purchase.
As per her kin, the loan included financing for a vehicle as well as funds linked to her husband’s hospital. They have claimed that her signatures did not appear on the relevant documents.
A family member said, “We are unaware of the fact that whether she died by suicide or had been murdered. Her post-mortem report shall reveal the truth.”
Police probe on
Police officials aware of the incident said a case has been registered on the basis of the allegations made by Dr Meenakshi’s kin. They added further action would depend on the findings of the probe and post-mortem report.
Officials maintained that Dr Piyush has not been questioned yet, while his cell phone is switched off. The cops are continuing to gather evidence as they seek to ascertain the exact circumstances surrounding Dr Meenakshi’s death.
