WhatsApp noise cancellation feature: Messaging giant WhatsApp is reportedly rolling out a new noise cancellation feature for voice and video calls, currently made available to select Android Beta users. The update, as per tech experts, is designed to improve call quality by reducing unwanted background noise in real-time conditions. 

Notably, the feature was first identified in development earlier this year, and is expected to benefit users who frequently speak to people in noisy environments like public spaces, traffic zones or outdoor settings.

Feature targets clearer conversations

WABetaInfo reported that the functionality is being introduced to Android Beta users running version 2.26.14.1. The feature uses advanced processing to eradicate ambient sounds like wind and traffic without distorting the speaker’s voice. 

The feature is spotted within the in-call interface and is reportedly enabled by default, ensuring that users get their hands on improved audio clarity without needing to activate it manually. However, the ones who prefer unaltered sound can disable it. 

How does the feature work?

The noise cancellation feature operates in real time during both video and voice calls. If only one participant has the feature enabled, it enhances the clarity of their outgoing audio for the listener. However, incoming sound quality improves only when both users have activated the feature in their respective apps. 

This suggests a dual-end optimisation system, potentially encouraging broader adoption once the feature is rolled out for all users.

No timeline confirmed for global release

While the feature remains limited to Beta users, parent company Meta has not confirmed a timeline officially for its global release. Industry watchers expect a phased rollout to all users in the coming weeks. It is noteworthy that the tool was previously spotted in an earlier Beta version (2.26.11.8), indicating ongoing testing and refinement before a wider rollout. 

More updates in the pipeline

Additionally, WhatsApp is reportedly working on several new enhancements. These include a dedicated app for Apple CarPlay, currently in Beta testing via TestFlight, as well as improved storage management tools that allow users to identify and delete large files within chats. Moreover, the platform has also introduced support for using multiple accounts on iOs devices, reflecting a broader push towards flexibility and user convenience.
